Bowmore School Council Annual Report

Read about all the highlights of the year, and learn more about how School Council represents your voice at Bowmore!

Goodbye from Principal Hanson

"Good-bye Bowmore, It is with deep appreciation that I write to you, as Bowmore Principal, for one last time. After five wonderful years at Bowmore, I am leaving to embrace new experiences as the principal at Kimberley /Beaches Alternative Schools...." Read Principal Hanson's goodbye message here

On June 20, we learned that our school Principal, Lilian Hanson, will be leaving Bowmore after 5 years. Ms. Hanson will be moving to a different neighbourhood school, Kimberley PS/Beaches Alternative. We wish her much success in her new placement, and are sorry to see her go.

Additionally, due to changes in staffing allocations TDSB-wide, Bowmore is losing our second Vice-Principal. Stevan Ivancevic will be leaving Bowmore and we wish him well.

In September, Bowmore will be welcoming a new Principal, Thelma Sambrook. Ms. Sambrook comes to us from Summit Heights PS in North York. We will post a letter of introduction from Ms. Sambrook on this site soon.

We're Fans of Learning & Teaching!

An ongoing issue at Bowmore has been high summer temperatures in our classrooms, particularly in west-facing rooms. We know that in May, June and September it can be difficult to learn and to teach, when temperatures in some classrooms can reach well into the 30's.

Two years ago, School Council used fundraising proceeds to purchase a number of fans for the hottest classrooms. Since that time, new classrooms have opened up at Bowmore and the heat has continued to rise school-wide. To address this issue in the short-term, a committee was re-struck at the May 2012 Council meeting (called the "Fan Club"), to assess which rooms are the hottest and purchase a sufficient quantity of fans.

We're pleased to report that thanks to a generous discount from Seabreeze Corporation, we were able to purchase 10 high-efficiency oscillating fans, meaning that we now have enough for at least one fan in every occupied classroom. Thank you to the amazing parent volunteers who sprang into action for our kids, during the hottest May on record!

However, we know that this need is far from over. Once again this year has been a scorcher already, and we can expect that this trend will continue into the foreseeable future. That's why we will be pursuing longer-term, more permanent and eco-friendly cooling and ventilation solutions with our Trustee and TDSB officials. Please email us at bowmoresc@gmail.com if you have suggestions or if you can help with advocacy or letter writing.

Bowmore Parents ROCKED the 80's!

THANKS FOR MAKING IT A SUCCESS!
With great people, great music, a packed dance floor, and fabulous silent auction items, we had the recipe for an awesome fundraiser on April 28 for Bowmore Rocks. And all that fun added up to some great enrichment for our children's school, raising over $4,000 for music programs and other enrichment activities at Bowmore!

Many thanks to all the parent volunteers who schlepped, sold, blew up balloons and solicited donations for the silent auction. Also thanks to the Royal Canadian Legion, Baron Byng Beaches Branch for its gracious hospitality. Thanks to everyone's support, we had a great night for a great cause.

And a HUGE thanks to our many sponsors who donated items for the silent auction (including our talented kids and teachers!). You'll see many small neighbourhood businesses in this list below - please remember to frequent these local businesses and be sure to thank them for supporting Bowmore!
